Do you have a query about your general health and well being? Are you eating the foods best suited to your body’s particular needs? Are you getting sufficient rest? How many miles have you clocked up on your car (your body)? The car in this chapter is taken to symbolise the human body. Keeping this image in mind ask yourself if you have been driving yourself too hard or too fast?

Have you been allowing others to drive you too hard? Are you burning yourself out? The red warning light may be flashing for some time, before you become aware of it. If you were given a car and told it would have to last you ninety years, how would you look after it? Would you drive it recklessly or would you drive it with care? Would you drive it as fast as you could at every opportunity? Would you put a duster over the red warning light, so that you could not see it? Would you use second grade petrol or use old oil in the engine? Would you leave the engine running when the car had stopped, and never give it a chance to cool down? When something went wrong with it, would you ignore the problem until something more serious went wrong, and only then attend to it? Would you allow anybody and everybody to drive it, use it and abuse it? Do you honestly think this car would last you very long if you continued treating it in this way?

Alternatively, you could make sure that you use the correct oil for the engine, drive it at a comfortable pace, switch off the engine whenever it was not in use and carry out any necessary repairs as soon as they are needed. Your body is symbolised by the car. Your body must last you a lifetime. If you want it to withstand the rigors of modern living, you must learn how to look after it. How can this be done?

By learning when to switch off your engine, allowing your body, mind and spirit to cool down and relax. 
  • By seeking out new ways to improve your life and general well-being.
  • By always moving at a pace which is comfortable for your body.
  • By taking care to consume only those foods or drinks which agree with your body.
  • By not allowing yourself to be pushed faster or harder than is safe or comfortable for you.
  • By protecting yourself from people who disregard your feelings and limitations.
  • By taking responsibility for your own health and wellbeing.
Most importantly by learning how to follow your intuition and gut feelings. In so doing you will instinctively know when to slow down and check your health. Reflection: Light a candle for yourself. Breathe deeply and slowly. When you feel quiet and relaxed reflect upon the following prayer:

God give me the courage to rest my racing mind and body. Give me the courage to respect my physical limitations. Help me to say “no” to others without feeling guilty. Give me the courage to love and respect myself as I really am. Give me the courage to ask for help when I need it. God I thank you for the wonderful gift of life. Help me to take responsibility for my life and to make the choices in life that are for my greater good and the greater good of all.
