Each sound we hear triggers an emotion. It can be fear, joy, anxiety, anger or happiness. The sound of a clock chiming on the hour can trigger anxiety for one person who may have difficulty sleeping and be unable to remain asleep as the clock chimes and the hours get closer to when they must get out of bed and face a day of hassle and fear.
Another person listening to the clock chiming on the hour may feel more and more elation as the night passes because this is the day they have been looking forward to since they were a child. Perhaps it’s their wedding day, or the start of an exciting holiday or the first day of an interesting new job.
The body contracts to protect itself and may contract in reaction to some sounds especially if the sound they are hearing is associated with pain, loss, anxiety, sadness, trauma or shock. No amount of reassuring will convince this person that they are safe and that there is no need for them to worry.
