It is so easy to overindulge in the foods we like, not just on special occasions but on any day and this can lead to major health problems.
Eating disorder can affect and change your life in many ways and overindulging or binge eating is just one such disorder.
An eating disorder can be characterised as overindulging in food leading to weight gain. This is generally called ‘compulsive eating disorder’. The opposite to this is anorexia, whereby a person eats less and less and in extreme cases may stop eating altogether.
With a compulsive eating disorder, a person may even eat food well beyond the point of where their body feels full, leading to extreme weight gain which can adversely affect their health. These people might feel an uncontrollable urge to eat food, any food, and cannot stop even when they want to, and then comes the guilt. Binge eating in this way can lead to obesity. People who suffer with any type of eating disorder may need professional help to learn how to cope with these conditions in order to maintain some control over their lives.
Anorexia on the other hand is often tied to perfectionism. People who have anorexia often become obsessed over their weight and believe that avoiding food will make them look thin and beautiful. In other cases, anorexia may be related to severe mental trauma. Another eating disorder is Bulimia Nervosa. People who suffer with bulimia can eat too much and then induce vomiting, laxatives or other extreme measures to purge the food.
It is possible to regain control and not let an eating disorder consume your life. Understanding the reasons for eating disorders may help to come to terms with it and lead to a regaining of normal eating and a normal life. Many problems related to binge eating, over eating or the opposite which is anorexia can be related to emotional or mental issues and as such your therapist or practitioner may be able to help using bio energy.
Reasons for eating disorders can vary from person to person. These conditions are often thought to be brought about by feelings of low self-esteem, lacking in confidence, shame, guilt, or inadequacy, negative emotions, or issues with their self-image.
An eating disorder may in some cases be instigated as a result of stress, or anxiety, depression, loneliness or some traumatic event in the person’s life. The eating disorder may also be as a result of bullying, where an individual was being bullied, or comments being made to or about the person.

- Case 1. A girl of 18 attended for therapy who had some years witnessed her younger brother being hit by a car and had afterwards died. She was around 10 years old and her younger brother was 5 at the time. She always felt that when the emotions of guilt started to immerge, she could “stuff it all down, and keep a lid on it, by binge eating and stuffing herself with food. This resulted in her now having a serious weight problem.
- Case 2. Another lady had witnessed the death of her father from a short-term illness. She felt guilty because she believed that if she had called a doctor in time or attended to him earlier in some way he may not have died. She was now bulimic and suffering with anorexia. She felt guilt and shame over her father’s death. She now rejected the foods she was eating. She didn’t feel she deserved to eat this nourishing food.
- Case 3. Another lady who had been abused when she was a young child, was now anorexic. In this case she associated the foods with accepting what had happened to her
In many cases such as these, there may be an underlying psychological, emotional, or mental health issues that needs to be addressed and may require therapy at an energy level such as bio-energy therapy and /or counselling.

Your most asked question
Can complementary therapy help with binge eating or other eating disorders?
It is important to try and identify the reasons for binge eating and overeating. It may be related to guilt, shame, bullying, trauma, loneliness, depression, feeling anxious or stressed, lacking in self-confidence or perhaps low self-esteem. Sometimes the problem might lie in unresolved emotional issues or emotional blockages in the body’s energy field in which case bio energy therapy may be the answer.
