How our German Shepherd Saved our lives
We had a lovely German shepherd called Prince who was part of our family for many years. He was generally a very passive dog and loved his occasional session of energy therapy. He used to love to lie under my therapy window whenever I worked with a client. If a client came to our gate which was some distance away, he would stay where he was and bark until I came out of the therapy session.
Prince’s barking interrupted my therapy sessions
On many occasions, Prince’s barking interrupted my therapy sessions, so my husband encouraged Prince to move away by throwing a stone or a ball into the long grass in our garden. Prince had an amazing sense of smell, so he would return with the exact stone that had been thrown and place it on the doorstep.
Some years ago, we had a split-level outhouse which was used as a recording studio, so it was very well sealed for sound proofing.

My husband put a gas heater in the sealed studio
It was difficult to keep the studio from getting damp, so my husband put a gas heater in the sealed studio and left the heater on for a few days and nights to try and dry it out.
This studio was quite a distance from our house, so we felt it was quite safe to leave the gas heater on continuously.
Two days later Prince climbed up on the roof of the studio and started barking non-stop. We investigated why he was barking continuously so much, but we couldn’t identify any obvious reason for his non-stop barking.
When my husband went to the door of the studio, there was a really strong smell of gas. He was careful enough not to turn on any electrical lights or switches. He slowly opened the studio door and went in. He discovered that the flame had gone out on the gas heater but the gas switch was still turned on and had filled the studio full of gas.
He quickly opened the studio doors and windows and turned off the gas cylinder. At this stage Prince had stopped barking and was standing outside the studio door wagging his tail. We really believe that on that eventful day, Prince saved our lives.

My husband learned a good lesson
We were told afterwards that because the studio was so well sealed there wasn’t sufficient oxygen and the flame had gone out on the gas heater. Thankfully my husband learned a good lesson about leaving a gas heater turned full on, in an enclosed, sealed room.
